Amazing Grace

You might have seen this video when it came out a couple of years ago, but it’s one that I’ve come back to again and again when I’m looking for uplifting Sabbath music.  I’ve always loved the hymn, “Amazing Grace,” and wish it were included in our Sabbath hymnals.  But I also love the addition of the chorus:

My chains are gone, I’ve been set free
My God, my Savior has ransomed me
And like a flood, His mercy reigns
Unending love, amazing grace.

It’s a message that I don’t think we emphasize enough in Mormonism, so I’m grateful to have it sung so beautifully by women in a BYU acapella group.  And like a flood, His mercy reigns.  Unending love, amazing grace.

I love this video! I had never seen this arrangement until a few months ago when I began volunteering to teach religion classes at the jail. We show it at the end of our classes. After class has finished and while we’re waiting for the guards to come retrieve the attendees, we put this on to fill the time. It’s very popular, and if we forget the DVD one week, they always ask us where it is. It’s the highlight of class.

I wish we talked more about grace at church. The Book of Mormon is exquisitely grace-filled, but I feel that in our rush to distinguish ourselves from Protestants, we’ve turned grace into a bad word and thrown out something essential to the gospel.

I love this post and Trudy’s comment. A careful review of the Bible shows that the words in Amazing Grace are true. I would love to see it included in our hymnal.

I think people shrink from talking about Grace because we don’t fully understand it – so we talk about the Power of the Atonement – Same thing.

But we do have great GC talks about Grace.
