Poetry Sundays: Kaylin Haught

God Says Yes To Me

I asked God if it was ok to be melodramatic
and she said yes
I asked her if it was ok to be short
and she said it sure is
I asked her if I could wear nail polish
or not wear nail polish
and she said honey
she calls me that sometimes
you can do just exactly
what you want to
Thanks God I said
And is it ok if I don’t paragraph
my letters
Sweetcakes she said
who knows where she picked that up
what I’m telling you is
Yes Yes Yes

by Kaylin Haught

I discovered this poem several years ago when I was becoming increasingly interested in Heavenly Mother and increasingly aware of how buried she was in Mormon discourse and thought. It resonated with me on a number of levels. I loved this vision of an affirmative female God. She was expansive, not limiting. She was loving and personal, not abstract and distant. She said “Yes Yes Yes” to our desires and in the face of our doubts and concerns.
