- In a previous post, I invited people to write in with their stories about how having a gay loved one affects LDS families. Here’s one such story: Ana, guest-posting at FMH, writes about her brother’s coming out, his suicide attempt, and the stretching of her own soul: “As for me, most often I feel like I am straddling a great crevasse, one that sometimes seems to be widening. On occasions I have felt better standing with both feet on the church side of that crack, trying to reach across. That’s a more secure and comfortable place to be. But it doesn’t always feel right to me. Family is family.”

I recently came across this beautiful 2002 women’s conference talk by his wife, Win. She doesn’t sugar-coat the experience of grief and adversity; she does speak of faith in moving terms.

Deborah Tannen in the NY Times: In the face of public groping and sexual harrassment, Greek women tend to fight back: “Whatever the reasons for them, the different ways of responding to public molestation led to different emotional reactions. Though many of the Greek women reported feeling anger and fear, they didn’t talk about feeling helpless.”

I found the last link about sexual harassment very interesting. I had a very similar experience in the Paris subway. Wish I had been more like the Greek women.
Sorry, Caroline, this is tangential, but the public-transport-sexual-harassment thing brought back vivid memories of my mission in southern Italy. (We called them the bus molesters.) The first time I was grabbed on the bus, I was really traumatized. Over time I got a lot more assertive in smacking hands away and telling men off if necessary. I realize it’s a calculated risk, but I found that without exception, they backed down, even apologized. I think I had to consciously decide to get over some of my nice-Mormon-girl training and learn to stand up for myself.
