Friday Photo Musing: Color
by Jana
“I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way–things I had no words for.”
~Georgia O’Keefe
A favorite poem of LDS artist Minerva Teichert, Eugene Field’s “Red”:
Any color, so long as it’s red,
Is the color that suits me best,
Though I will allow there is much to be said
For yellow and green and the rest;
But the feeble tints which some affect
In the things they make or buy
Have never–I say it with all respect–
Appealed to my critical eye…
“I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don’t notice it”
~Alice Walker
“On [Friday] she woke up and realized that she’d forgotten the definition of the word ‘Impossible.’ She decided that it must not have been important.”
~From The Persistence of Being Yellow: Book of Recipes for Life
In my garden there is a large place for sentiment. My garden of flowers is also my garden of thoughts and dreams. The thoughts grow as freely as the flowers, and the dreams are as beautiful. ~Abram L. Urban
I know that if odour were visible, as colour is,
I’d see the summer garden in rainbow clouds.
~Robert Bridges, “Testament of Beauty”
“In our life there is a single color, as on an artist’s palette, which provides the meaning of life and art.
It is the color of love.”
~Marc Chagall
My parents have Georgia O’Keefe flower prints hanging all over the house. Whenever I visit home, I tell my mom to “take the damn vagina flowers off the wall,” which usually gets me yelled at. 🙂
I think O’Keefe’s paintings are provocative because you can “see” them on so many levels. FWIW, I think this pic from my blog today is particularly O’Keefe-ish although that wasn’t my intention when I posted it.

And purple is a pain to photograph as well, yet the colours on these images are great.

Mmmm . . . thank God for spring.
Gorgeous photos and great poetic pairings!
I’m a fanatic for color in film and art pieces!
For some GREAT visual saturation, check out:
-SPIRITED AWAY (Hayao Miyazaki) Animation
-THE LADY AND THE DUKE (Eric Rohmer and any other French New Wave Director)
-RAISE THE RED LANTERN (Zhang Yimou)
Also, have you ever visually immersed yourself in Muslim Persian Miniatures or Islamic art motifs? FABULOUS COLOR!
and then there’s that Spring ’08 Louis Vuitton/Marc Jacobs high glossy tote that has taken my breath away……I’ll fill u in at the ’08 retreat this fall…
just a couple color things for starters…
For movies, I’ll add in the Chinese martial arts movie “Hero.”
And though it’s awfully caricatured and not one of my favorite bollywood films, try Disney’s distributed “BRIDE & PREJUDICE” (a take on Austen’s work). This film is soaked in color!
